WE ARE KINGDOM BUILDING

Senior Ministry

"A SHOUT IN HEAVEN IN 2007"

Purpose: To provide opportunities of fellowship to "golden age members" through sightseeing and shopping tips and an annual church sponsored luncheon.

Scripture: Psalm 37:25 "I have been young, and now I am old; yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken nor his seed begging for bread."

Thought to remember Lord, when I am wrong, make me willing to change, and when I am right make me easy to live with.

Rev. George M. Howard started the Senior Citizen Program in 1987. During his tenure Rev. Howard encouraged outings and social gatherings for the seniors. His motto for this program was "they have paid their dues and now is their time to enjoy life."

Our first program, "Celebrating Your Golden Years" was the beginning of the annual Church sponsored dinners for our seniors. The event featured our first memory book with memorable comments and quotes from the seniors. The dinner speaker was Sis. Honnie Webster.

During the years, we have traveled to many cities shopping, sightseeing, and enjoying good food. On each outing, the seniors know we will have our acclaimed "snack packs" for them. Our most talked about and requested outing is "The House On the Rock".

The Senior Citizen Ministry ended 1997 with a different flair. The annual Christmas Luncheon was held on Saturday, December 6, 1997 with 75 seniors in attendance. Each senior received a Christmas gift, compliments of the committee. The food, fun, and fellowship provided a wonderful start for the holiday season.

On Sunday, December 7, 1997, over 40 seniors participated in a fun outing of "A Trip Around The Town". The event included viewing holiday lights at several homes in the city. We visited the home of Anita Johnson where we were treated to a live nativity scene and delicious hors d'oeuvres. Anita also provided a Christmas gift of an African American Santa to each person. The evening ended at the home of Bernard and Vergestend Cooper for singing Christmas carols. Music for the evening was pianist, Tim Tate. The supper and Christmas gifts were provided by the committee.

Under the direction of Rev. Michael E. Coleman, the Senior Citizen Program continues to flourish. As committee members, we have received more in true Christian example from the senior who participate in this program that words can express. Their gentle laughter, sweet compassion, never ending patience and sincere love is our reason for working with them.

"He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." Mark 1:8b (NRSV)

"Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world." Matthew 28: 19-20
