In 1875, the
Railroad Chapel was built in the 1500 block of East 4th
Street to serve the religious needs of people living along
the Illinois Central Railroad. In 1914, under the leadership
of the Reverend I.W. Bess, an African-American Methodist
Church acquired the building and moved it to this address.
